History of Kashmir Valley
Kashmir tourism offer you space to know the History of Jammu and Kashmir included the Culture, The word “Kashmir” is believed to have originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Ka’ meaning water and ‘shimmer’ meaning desiccate. Thus Kashmir means a land desiccated from water. As per Hindu mythology, Kashmir was once a holy lake Satisar (the lake of Goddess Sati or Durga), which was drained by the great saint Kashyap who was the grandson of Lord Brahma. Later on, the Brahmins of the nearby areas inhabited the place.
It was during the rule of the great Mauryan emperor Ashoka that Buddhism paved way into Kashmir. The state witnessed Kingdoms of Kushanas in 2nd century, Durlabha- Vardhana in 17th century, Utpalas in 855 AD, Tantrins, Yaskaras, and the Loharas.
The last Hindu ruler of Kashmir was Udyan Dev. His chief queen Kota Raniwas was the de facto ruler of the kingdom. With her death in 1339, the Hindu rule in Kashmir ended and then the Kashmir was ruled by Muslim king Sultan Shams Ud Din. The greatest ruler of this dynasty was undoubtedly Sultan Zain ul Abidin. Kashmir prospered both culturally and politically under his reign.
This dynasty was overthrown by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1586 and the Mughal rule was considered the Golden era of Kashmir as it gained cultural and economic prosperity. the Mughal Empire Promotes Kashmir tourism at the time that the famous Mughal gardens of Srinagar Nishat and Shalimar came into existence.
In 1757, Kashmir came under the rule of Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani who invaded India many times. Sikh emperor Ranjit Singh invaded Kashmir in 1819 and thus Kashmir became part of the Sikh empire. Two Anglo-Sikh wars were fought between Sikhs and Ranjit Singh which resulted in the complete end of Sikh rule in Kashmir.
After the annexation of Sikh rule, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir came under British sovereignty. After that British gave away Kashmir to Gulab Singh for the sum of Rupees 75 lakh under the Treaty of Amritsar. Gulab Singh extended his Kashmir territory by annexing Ladakh and after his death, Ranbir Singh took the throne and ruled till 1885. Maharaja Hari Singh ascended the throne in 1925 and continued his rule till 1950.
Kashmir’s first political party was formed in 1932 by Sheikh Abdullah under the name of All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference. The party was later renamed as National Conference in 1939 and it is one of the major political parties of Jammu and Kashmir.
